Energy Assessments Explainer
"A House is a System"
Energy Assessment is a whole house approach to determine the home's energy efficiency. It evaluates all the major building components that affects energy efficiency. It also considers climate & home's orientation. Reports are provided that identifies conditions, est. usage and identifies cost-effect recommendations.

Climate - Identify climate characteristics: hot, cold, humidity
Orientation - the home's orientation is documented. Walls exposed to South & West will Building Envelope - Evaluates walls, windows, roof and foundation. Insulation is crucial to an energy efficient home. Heating/Cooling/Ducting - Water Heater - Water heaters overtime has improved its EE. Also tankless water heater utilize a fraction of energy compared to standard tank. Appliances - Evaluate kitchen & laundry appliances for age & EnergyStar rating Energy Assessment includes measuring (take offs) of the building envelope including its orientation. Walls & windows exposure to the south & west will have prolong sun exposure. There are limitations to standard EAs. Plug-ins and habits. Plug-ins are any electrical appliance including kitchen, TVS, computers, adapters for cell phone and more. These days we're flooded with personal USB devices. |
Energy Assessments
"One size does not fit all"
Sustainrgy is certified to conduct a full portfolio of energy assessments. Many of these assessments require certification from Dept. of Energy, (DOE), state of Calif. and energy utility requirements.
Our approach is to fully understand clients needs to determine next steps in an energy assessments. Because our only objective are energy assessments, we focus our expertise to meet the clients needs. We're not distracted with upselling a new heating/cooling or solar system.

Building Performance Institute (BPI), Home Peformance Assessment - Comprehensive energy assessment following Building Performance Institute's (BPI) protocol. that utilizes diagnostic testing with blower door, duct test, combustion appliance test and diagram the property. Report estimate energy usage, and recommendation with energy saving, carbon reduction savings. These energy assessment may be required for programs offer by energy utility or gov't.
Home Energy Score - Energy assessment following Dept of Energy(DOE) energy assessment protocol. Report is energy directly through the DOE to provide an energy score 1 - 10. 10 indicates highly energy efficient. Determines estimated energy usage and recommendations.
Standard Energy Assessment - Full energy assessment to include evaluation of building envelope, mechanicals, lighting, appliances and plug-ins. Identify conditions for it's energy efficiency, comfort issue, health & safety conditions. Includes next-step and cost-effective recommendations
Tools
Energy assessments utilize specialized tools specific to our industry. Must be maintained and periodically calibrated to maintain accuracy.
Thermal Imaging Camera - This specialized camera detects temperature differentials. It greatly aides in detecting issues with insulation like quality, effectiveness and absence in walls. This tool is essential in energy assessments.

Duct Blaster - This tool detects air leakage in your ducting. It contains a blower, manometer and duct covers. It pressurizes the ducting system to measure leakages. Leaky ducting systems are not only wasteful but create health issues inside a home. Old rigid ducting leaks on average 30%. Today standards all new ducting must leak 5% or less.
Blower Door - Tests overall air pressure of the home. This measures air leakage to the outside of the dwelling. The front door is block with a high pressure fan and a manometer to measure air leakage. Test will depressurize the home.
Old homes are drafty with moderate air leakage. This is wasteful. New building standards require homes to be airtight. This will improve energy efficiency and minimize indoor air quality issues.
