HERS Tests
HERS tests encompass evaluation many building components by a 3rd party certified energy assessor through the Calif. Energy Commission (CEC). These tests include diagnostic testing and visual inspections in the field for residential new construction, renovations and alteration such as replacing heating, cooling, ducting systems.
Other HERS testing includes other building components such as insulation (pre/post install), hot water insulation, IAQ fans, air tightness and ventilation.

The following are the list of HERS Tests:
Heating/cooling/ducting
DUCTING - Required with new HVAC installations. New ducting installation must leak 5% or below. Existing ducting system must leak 15% or less.
AIR CONDITIONING - New AC must be tested for airflow, Fan watt draw and refrigerant
IAQ FAN
Water Heating/plumbing
Insulated Hot Water piping - All hot water piping must be insulated. This must be done prior to sealing inner walls.
INSULATION
QII - Quality Insulation Installation - Must be completed prior to inner wall installation. Multi -site visits to verify weather stripping, & insulation. HERS raters must be involved early in the project cycle.
Existing Conditions
E+ A+ A+ - Initiated by energy consultant to provide credits on renovation projects for older buildings. Energy consultant can reduce energy requirements for older homes particularly prior 1978. HERS raters inspects the property for old conditions like single-pane windows, insulation, water heater & more.
NEW 2019 Energy Efficiency Standards
The following are new HERS Testing included in the 2019 Energy Efficiency Standards. These went to effect Jan. 01,2020.
- Drain water heat recovery
- Multi-family unit enclosure sealing
- Kitchen range hoods
- Heat pump heating capacity
- Whole-house fan
